Dartmouth, NS - Ankara University won the Turkish Super League so they qualified for the first round of the Continental Cup this year. Round one was played in Jaca, Spain with a team from Israel, Lithuania, and a host team from Spain hoping to move on to round 2.
The team picked to win round was the Lithuanian club Energija Elektrenai. Unfortunately for them, the airline they were supposed to use to play to Spain went bankrupt the day they were set to leave, so they couldn't make the round robin tournament. So Bat Yam HC (Israel), CH Jaca (Spain), and Ankara University (Turkey) proceeded to play. Jaca became the number one choice to move on to round 2 with Ankara's hopes resting on its goaltenders shoulders.
The first match had the host Jaca take on Bat Yam with Jaca easily coming ahead of the Israel team 15-0 (shots on goal 85-10). Saturday had Ankara play Bat Yam in a free-for-all shooting style of a game with Ankara coming ahead 8-3 (shots 84-36).
Sunday was the match to see with the winner of this game proceeding onto round 2 of the Continental Cup. Jaca proved to be too strong for Ankara to handle and walked away with a 7-1 win (shots 40-34 for Jaca).
Jaca now moves onto Round 2 Group B to played in the Netherlands and having a team from Poland, Estonia and a host club competing to move onto Round 3.
