Major League Soccer Kicks Off with a bang

The 2011 MLS season started this weekend and my Whitecaps defeated Toronto FC 4-2. Two goals came from the Whitecaps designated player Eric Hassli. Great game, look forward to the season. Overall, the league has to be happy with attendance as the opening 10 games averaged 21,046 fans! Sounders FC saw 36,433 fans come to their home opener!

Whitecaps FC had one fan in particular help get the crowd up at Empire Field. See the video below. You may notice him as he plays for the Phoenix Suns in the NBA, is a two time NBA MVP, and is also part owner of the Whitecaps.

In a very emotional story, DC United forward Charlie Davies made is MLS debut after taking a year and a half off to recover from a tragic accident that left one person dead and almost took his. Here is the list of injuries he suffered: Davies broke the fibula, tibia and femur of his right leg (stabilizing the limb required insertion of two titanium rods); tore a ligament in his left knee; fractured his left elbow, eye socket and nose; suffered serious head trauma; and lacerated his bladder.(From ESPN). For the full tragic story, ESPN covered Charlies recovery from near death to top flight soccer

In his first game back, Charlie scored 2 goals. Here is his interview after the game.

Looking forward to a great MLS season!
