While watching some hockey games this weekend some names of NHL goalies popped into my and it got me wondering where they disappeared too? One of the first goalies that came to mind was Roman Chechmanek. A 6th round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2000, Roman burst onto the NHL scene with hot numbers and a quirky style similar to another famous Czech goalie, Dominik Hasek.
He made the NHL All-Star game in 2001 and won the Jennings Trophy in 2003 (best Goals Against Average for season). But then his game fell off drastically. The Flyers shipped him to the LA Kings where his play did not improve. His last NHL season was his only season with LA as the Kings released him in 2004.
After that, Roman went back to his native country and played in the top league in the Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, and returned back to the Czech Republic to play two seasons and retired from the game in 2009.
