That was not a typing error. In case those of you haven't heard, Mexico has had the largest outdoor rink in the world for last 2 years. And since the Mexican Ice Hockey Federation (which started it firsts semi-pro/senior hockey league this season) is hosting the IIHF Under-20 World Junior Championship (Division 3 level), they decided to host the first game on the outdoor rink!
Seems like Winter Classics are continuing to spread!
The teams participating in this tournament are:
Chinese Taipei
Bulgaria
New Zealand
North Korea
Serbia
Turkey
Mexico
The opening game will be played between Mexico and Bulgaria and there will be seating for 50,000 people. This game will be broadcasted live on national TV as well as shown a few South American countries. No word if Pierre McGuire will make down there from his World Junior post in Buffalo to offer is colour commentary.
The location for this game (see photos) is right in the heart of Mexico City in the Zocalo. The winner of this tournament gets promoted to the Division 2 tournament for 2012.

After Canada wins Gold tomorrow, I'll be looking forward to cheering for Turkey to make the top two, so that they can advance to Division II. Won't be easy though...
ReplyDeleteMexico won the tournament, beating the serbians 4-2 in the final game. Great tournament for the Mexicans.
